Diploma in Computer Support: Service and Networks (Level 5)
Aim of the Course
To enable students to study for and gain internationally recognised industry exams that will equip graduates for careers as PC technicians, Help Desk analysts and network administrators.
The external certifications prove competence in areas such as installation, configuration, preventative maintenance, networking, security, troubleshooting and customer service. The examinations are taken in our on-site examination suite, and include:
- CompTIA A+
- CompTIA Network+
- CompTIA Linux+
Outcomes
Students who complete the diploma will obtain the learning outcomes as listed below:
- The capability of carrying out processes that require a wide range of technical knowledge
- The ability to apply appropriate methods and procedures in response to a variety of technical issues
- Developed a broad range of knowledge with significant depth in some areas
They will also have gained the following additional skills from undertaking the full program:
- Experience in working with different teams of people
- Communication, problem solving and customer relationship development
- The ability to identify and advise on business IT requirements, both in written report and through verbal presentation
- Employability skills which today's employers require
Students who complete this diploma and related external exams are equipped for entry level employment within the IT industry, or may alternatively proceed with higher level studies, including the Diploma in Computer Network Management (Level 6).
The IT industry acknowledges that internationally recognised certifications are a good indicator of proficiency and competency and can be considered a standard for potential employees. By undertaking these courses and gaining the examinations students' skills are validated and benchmarked.
Course Content
The course is divided into three semesters. A student successfully completing the required course work may exit at the end of either of the first two semesters with the relevant certificate.
First Semester: Certificate in Computer Servicing
- Computer hardware and Operating Systems
- Identifying, assembling and disassembling computer components
- Supporting and troubleshooting hardware
- Installing, configuring and maintaining Operating Systems
- Supporting and troubleshooting Operating Systems
- Partitioning and formatting hard disk drives
- Customer communication and interaction, and job related professionalism
Second Semester: Certificate in Computer Networking and Communications
- Network topologies
- Network hardware devices, media and architectures
- Fundamentals of network security
- Implementing and configuring network protocols
- Network communication and routing
- Developing professional phone and Help Desk skills
- Developing reports and proposals
- Working with customers
- Making formal presentations
Third Semester: Certificate in Linux Systems
- Install and administer Linux systems
- Configure Linux file systems and performance
- Work with the BASH shell and X Windows
- Maintain and troubleshoot Linux
- Configure networking and security
Duration
36 weeks full time:
Monday - Friday 9:00 am - 2:00 pm
Entry Requirements
- Knowledge of computers and basic computer applications
- IELTS overall band score of 5.5 (international students), with no band less than 5.5
- An appropriate NZIS Student Permit to study at ITTI (international students)
- Access to personal computer for off-campus learning (desirable)
