Moving to Auckland

Are you an international student moving to Auckland, New Zealand? Here is some useful information about what you need to bring to New Zealand and procedures on arrival.

Before arrival

We strongly advise that you start making your air travel arrangements as soon as possible, as flights to Auckland are often booked well in advance.

What to bring

The following lists have been made with the help of international students who have studied in New Zealand. We hope you find their suggestions helpful.

We advise you to pack the following essentials:

  • A dictionary translated from English into your own language
  • Originals of your transcripts and birth certificate
  • Receipts for payment of fees, accommodation, visa etc
  • Immunisation records
  • Current driver's licence
  • Medical records

The following items may also be useful:

  • Credit cards
  • Photos of family, home, and your country
  • Videos/music from home (New Zealand's electrical conversion is 240V)
  • Laptop computer
  • Musical instrument, tennis/squash racquet etc
  • Travellers cheques (better than carrying cash)

On arrival

Customs

Agriculture is very important to New Zealand's economy. Plant or animal products from abroad can carry diseases. New Zealand Customs help protect New Zealand's important agriculture economy by checking luggage for plant or animal products. If you are caught bringing these products into the country you will pay a large fine. If you are unsure about what you are bringing into New Zealand, then you should ask the Customs officer at the airport, or check their website http://www.customs.govt.nz/ before you pack your luggage. Honesty is the best policy!

Transport from the airport

At Auckland International Airport there is a designated area providing safe transport from the Airport to Auckland City. Shuttle buses, taxies and bus service are available - you will find them as you leave the arrival lounge (after Customs). The costs range from approximately NZ$50 to $80.

If you have arranged home stay accommodation, you can be picked up and taken directly to your home stay family. This service costs NZ$90 per person and must be arranged and paid before your arrival.

If you change your flight details and do not tell us of your changes, you will still be liable to pay for all pre-arranged airport pickup.
